German Traditional Beef Rouladen Recipe
Savour traditional German cuisine with Beef Rouladen, a hearty dish of tender beef, onions, bacon, and pickles, slow-cooked in a rich gravy.
Ingredients:
- 1.5 lbs beef top round, sliced into thin cutlets
- 1/2 cup finely chopped onion
- 6 slices of bacon, diced
- 1/2 cup finely chopped dill pickles
- 2 tbsp mustard
- 1 tsp dried thyme
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
Instructions:
1. Preheat oven to 325°F (160°C).
2. In a pan, cook bacon until crispy, then set aside.
3. In same pan, sauté onions until softened.
4. In large bowl, combine cooked onions, pickles, mustard, thyme, salt, pepper.
5. Lay beef cutlets flat, spread onion mixture, roll up, secure with toothpicks.
6. In large Dutch oven, brown rouladen on all sides, add flour to coat.
7. Gradually add beef broth, cover, transfer to oven.
8. Braise 2-3 hours or until tender.
