What is Farmers Schnitzel?
Farmers Schnitzel, also known as Bauernschnitzel, is a popular German dish that consists of a breaded and fried pork or veal cutlet topped with a rich and creamy mushroom sauce, onions, and sometimes bacon. 

Authentic German Farmers Schnitzel Recipe

Ingredients for the schnitzel:


- 4 pork or veal cutlets (about 1/4 inch thick)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 egg, beaten
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Vegetable oil or butter for frying

For the mushroom sauce:


- 1 cup mixed mushrooms (button, cremini, shiitake), sliced
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Fresh parsley, chopped (optional)

Instructions:


1. Prepare the schnitzel:
    - Season the cutlets with salt and pepper.
    - Dip each cutlet in the flour, then the beaten egg, and finally the breadcrumb mixture, pressing gently to coat.
2. Fry the schnitzel:
    - Heat about 1/2 inch (1 cm) of vegetable oil or butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
    - Fry the breaded cutlets for 3-4 minutes on each side, until golden brown and cooked through.
    - Transfer the schnitzel to a plate and keep warm.
3. Prepare the mushroom sauce:
    - In the same skillet, add the butter and sauté the chopped onion until softened.
    - Add the sliced mushrooms and cook until they release their liquid and start to brown.
    - Add the garlic, heavy cream, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper. Stir to combine.
    - Reduce the sauce by cooking for about 5 minutes or until it thickens slightly.
4. Assemble the Farmers Schnitzel:
    - Place a fried schnitzel cutlet on each plate.
    - Spoon the mushroom sauce over the schnitzel.
    - Top with chopped parsley, if desired.
    - Serve immediately and enjoy!
