Bienenstich! A classic German cake that's a delight to make and devour.
Ingredients:
For the cake:
- 1 1/2 cups (190g) all-purpose flour
- 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup (115g) unsalted butter, softened
- 4 large eggs
- 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup (120ml) whole milk, lukewarm
For the topping:
- 1/2 cup (115g) unsalted butter, softened
- 1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons honey
- 1/4 cup (30g) chopped almonds
- 1/4 cup (30g) candied orange peel, finely chopped
Instructions:
1. Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C). Grease a 9x13-inch (23x33cm) baking dish.
2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, and yeast.
3. Add softened butter, eggs, and milk. Mix until a smooth batter forms.
4. Pour batter into prepared baking dish. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.
5. While cake is baking, prepare topping. Mix softened butter, sugar, honey, almonds, and orange peel in a bowl.
6. Remove cake from oven and let cool for 5 minutes. Spread topping evenly over warm cake.
7. Return cake to oven and bake for an additional 5-7 minutes or until topping is golden brown.
